NENI - these are the initials of the first names of Nuriel, Elior, Nadiv and Ilan Molcho. Since 2009, the brothers and their mother Haya have been running the famous NENI restaurants, bringing a mix of Mediterranean and oriental food culture to the European metropolises. What started out as a restaurant at Vienna's Naschmarkt has quickly achieved cult status in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Inspired by Persian, Arabic, French and Russian influences, every restaurant sees itself as a place of encounter and relaxed get-togethers. The focus here is on sharing food and, of course, celebrating shared moments of pleasure. Served in balagan style - which means sympathetic chaos - everyone can try everything. Almost as if you were a guest at the Molchos' home. This love and passion for good food combined with shared experiences and a familiar atmosphere are the hallmarks of NENI.
We met the brothers in Vienna to find out exactly how they use their unu Scooter in their everyday life and which Viennese spots they prefer to go to on their scooter.
At NENI, business revolves around the family, even the name stands for you four Molcho brothers. What does family mean to you?
Family is the center of our company. That is why the name NENI is composed of our first letters. For us, family stands for people who stick together in good as well as in bad times and who are there for each other. For us, home is less a place than a feeling. Our home is wherever our family and friends are.
Do you share the tasks or how did you approach the allocation of the responsibilities?
In the beginning we all did everything. But over time our strengths showed themselves and we could therefore divide the areas among ourselves.
What do you think about sharing - is the unu Scooter also used by several people? Who gets the scooter, and when?
We played rock, paper, scissors and Elior won. Just kidding! Elior drives our unu Scooter most of the time, as he has to travel longer distances in the city all the time. From NENI at the Naschmarkt to Tel Aviv Beach by the Danube and back again. The unu Scooter makes Elior's everyday life a lot easier. To cover the distance with the unu Scooter makes the most sense. And there is no better way to get from A to B in the city and enjoy a soft breeze whilst driving. But of course the others are allowed to use the scooter as
Do you have different ways of using the scooter in everyday life - e.g. just for the way to and from work or for trips with friends?
We use our scooter for work, as well as in our free time and are totally enthusiastic. We really love the independence that it gives us.
What does your scooter enable you to do – are there places you now visit more often because you can reach them much faster?
In fact I can cover distances in the city faster with my unu Scooter. So I finally manage to play more basketball when I’m not working.
One of our values is "collective courage": we are the small company that has to assert itself against the big companies, but as a result can also remain more agile. NENI also started small. How did it all start and how did you succeed?
We didn't plan on getting this big. We strongly believe in Karma and think that when you do something with love and passion, only good things will happen. We are convinced of that. But of course, risk-taking behaviour and networking are also part of it.
What is planned for NENI in the next few years?
We are a young and hungry company and always open for new projects. Currently we’re working on setting up a new franchise and want to expand our supermarket products.
There are now seven NENI restaurants in five cities, but it all started in Vienna. What do you especially like about Vienna?
It's not for nothing that Vienna was chosen as the most liveable city in the world. We appreciate the culture, the social system for our fellow citizens, as well as the beautiful and preserved architecture and even the famous Viennese Grant. (Editor’s note: The Viennese are famous for complaining a lot. People are intentionally always very grumpy. The Viennese call it ‘grantig’.)
Which Viennese spots inspire you and do you recommend?
We love the fusion cuisine at Mochi and love the Miznon. Other than that, we share a love for the Viennese coffee house culture. We like to spend our free time in good company and with a delicious coffee at Jonas Reindl or Balthasar, just to name two of our favorite spots. With our Scooter we can always get quickly from one spot to the next and can thus be on the road in many different districts of our city – all in one day.
Food is of course always at the center at NENI – where do you find inspiration for new dishes?
We travel a lot and always like to be inspired by new innovations and trends from all over the world. Our dishes are the unification of all our gained impressions.
unu values sustainability. Our three founders wanted to make urban transport more sustainable and this is how the idea for the electric scooter came up. What is NENI's position on sustainability?
Sustainability is also very important to us. We are currently working with a consultant to make our company as sustainable as possible.
Thank you very much for your time and the interesting interview, dear Molchos.
